Through the years in EVE (most) players gather alot of channels they want and/or need to be in. Channels for Alliance, Corp, logi, intel, recruitment, channels with old friends, leadership channels and so on.
Currently these 'channeltabs' are sorted horizontally. One of the downsides of this system is that the total width of the 'chatbox' is determined by the number of channels and to some extent by the length of the channelname. With a big number of channels next to each other this usually means the chatbox get's so wide it would fill up an unwanted amount of your screen. This forces you to create multiple chatboxes to keep some sort of overview on your channels; once again taking up alot of space.
So my idea is pretty simple; sort these channel tabs vertically. This would look something like this (thnx HerrBert  ):

This shows the general idea. This way it's possible to view alot more channels in a relatively small amount of space. Also it is not as depending of the amount of channels nor the channelname, because adding a channel adds a tab with a fixed height which is very short  .
If possible this could be introduced to EVE as an option so people can choose to sort these channel tabs horizontally or vertically, depending on preference.

I'm assuming here the channel-list box is scrollable? Maybe with the option to get flashy channel names at the top of the list?
Adding a feature similar to broadcasts like "move to top" could be nice, although it would mean the sequence of your channels would change alot which might get confusing.

What also could be a nice addition to flashing tabs is the option to add a colour depending on the importance of the channel. So for example a chatchannel flashes green, while and intel flashes red .

Here's a summary of the additional options suggested in thread:
1) The width of the channeltabs can be adjusted making it able to show either more or less of the channelname;
2) The column with the channeltabs can be hidden/toggled/<.insert proper term here.>;
3) The channeltabs can be sorted by preference
